Description
The Okitsu soft scale (Pulvinaria okitsuensis) is a member of the Coccidae family within the Hemiptera order. This pest is recognized as a serious threat to citrus orchards, where it impacts plant health by extracting sap and causing significant physiological stress to the trees.
The primary hosts for this species are citrus plants, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. The insects are frequently found on tender shoots, foliage, and young bark. By clustering in these areas, they can rapidly sap the energy from the tree, particularly affecting young, vulnerable specimens.
The biological cycle involves the female producing a distinctive, cottony white ovisac (egg sac), which is a key diagnostic feature for identification. After hatching, the crawler stage moves to new feeding sites, facilitating the spread of the infestation throughout the orchard if left unchecked.
The damage caused by the Okitsu soft scale is twofold. First, the direct feeding weakens the tree and leads to leaf chlorosis and premature drop. Second, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaves and fruit, interfering with photosynthesis and reducing the overall quality of the harvest.
Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Farmers should focus on monitoring for the crawler stage, as this is the most vulnerable point in the life cycle for chemical control. Additionally, maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and pruning, along with the encouragement of biological control agents, remains a cornerstone of sustainable orchard management.
