Horse chestnut scale

The Horse chestnut scale (Pulvinaria regalis) is a sap-sucking insect belonging to the family Coccidae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is widely recognized for its impact on ornamental trees and shrubs, particularly in urban environments. It is characterized by the conspicuous, white, cottony egg sacs produced by females during the reproductive stage.

This insect affects a broad range of host plants, including notable species such as horse chestnut, lime (linden), maple, and various other broad-leaved trees. Because it thrives in urban settings, it has become a significant problem for park managers and municipal foresters who struggle to maintain the health and aesthetics of street trees.

The life cycle of this scale insect is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Overwintering occurs primarily in the second instar larval stage, found on the bark of twigs. As temperatures rise in spring, these larvae become active, feed on the sap, and mature. By early summer, the white ovisacs become visible, and the subsequent crawler stage emerges to colonize new parts of the host plant.

The damage caused by the Horse chestnut scale is significant. By extracting plant sap, the scale weakens the host, leading to leaf chlorosis, premature leaf drop, and dieback of branches. Furthermore, the secretion of large amounts of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and significantly reduces the ornamental appeal of the affected vegetation.

Effective management strategies for controlling this pest involve several key approaches:

• Systemic insecticide treatments applied during the active growth period.
• Application of horticultural oils during winter or early spring to target overwintering larvae.
• Monitoring for the emergence of "crawlers" in early summer to time chemical interventions accurately.
• Pruning and removal of heavily infested branches to reduce the overall population density.
