Pyronota is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. Commonly referred to as manuka beetles in their native range of New Zealand, these insects are significant pests that can inflict substantial damage on both commercial and residential vegetation. Understanding their taxonomy and behavioral patterns is essential for effective mitigation.

The damage caused by Pyronota is dual-faceted, affecting both the root system and the canopy of various plants. They are known to infest a wide variety of hosts, including grapevines, deciduous fruit trees, clover, and various ornamental species. The versatility of their diet makes them a persistent threat to diverse agricultural landscapes and commercial plantations.

The biological cycle of this pest is adapted to temperate climates. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larvae reside in the soil, where they spend a significant portion of their lives feeding on root fibers. Adult beetles emerge in the summer, often in large swarms, to feed on foliage and mate, effectively targeting the host plant twice during their life cycle.

The extent of damage is frequently severe. Adult beetles cause foliage defoliation, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to weakened growth and poor fruit quality. Meanwhile, larval feeding on roots can severely stunt plant growth or even kill younger plants by interrupting water and nutrient uptake, often resulting in widespread patches of yellowing or dying turf or crop rows.

Chemical control using registered insecticides applied during the peak flight period is a common necessity for high-value crops. Additionally, biological control agents such as nematodes are gaining popularity for managing soil-dwelling larvae.
