Armored scale

The genus Quadraspidiotus belongs to the family Diaspididae, commonly known as armored scales. These insects are significant agricultural pests characterized by the hard, protective cover (the scale) that protects them from environmental stressors and pesticides, making their management challenging.

These pests primarily target deciduous fruit trees, including apples, pears, plums, and cherries. They are also found on various ornamental shrubs and trees. The infestation often starts on the bark but spreads to fruits and leaves as the population density increases.

The biological cycle of Quadraspidiotus species typically involves overwintering as nymphs under the protective scale. As temperatures rise in spring, they mature and reproduce. Depending on the climate, these insects can complete one or more generations per year, with mobile first-instar nymphs known as 'crawlers' being the primary dispersal stage.

Infestation symptoms include localized red staining on bark and fruit surfaces, bark splitting, and stunted tree growth. Heavy infestations lead to a significant decline in tree vigor, reduced fruit quality, and can eventually cause the death of young branches or even the entire plant due to excessive sap loss.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain orchard health:

• Implementing dormant oil sprays to smother overwintering nymphs.
• Monitoring crawler emergence using sticky traps to apply contact insecticides at the right time.
• Promoting natural predators, such as parasitic wasps and ladybeetles, in the ecosystem.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the initial pest population density.
