Description

The wandering snail (Radix peregra) belongs to the family Lymnaeidae and the order Basommatophora. While widely distributed in freshwater habitats, it is recognized as a potential pest in agricultural sectors involving aquaculture, rice cultivation, and the production of ornamental aquatic plants.

Regarding its biology, Radix peregra is a hermaphroditic mollusk capable of rapid reproduction. Its life cycle involves laying eggs on submerged substrates or vegetation. These snails are highly resilient to fluctuating water temperatures and oxygen levels, allowing them to thrive in irrigation ditches and poorly managed ponds, leading to quick population booms.

The damage caused by the wandering snail is primarily mechanical. Using their specialized mouthparts, they graze on the tender tissues of aquatic plants, creating irregular holes and consuming leaf margins. Severe infestations can result in significant defoliation, stunted plant development, and in some cases, the total destruction of younger crops.

Furthermore, these snails are significant vectors for parasitic trematodes. Their presence in irrigation systems poses a dual threat: they not only damage the flora but also contaminate water with parasites, which may affect fish health or represent a risk to livestock grazing in areas irrigated with the contaminated water.

Control and protection strategies include:

  • Mechanical removal of snails and egg masses from the infested area.
  • Introducing predatory fish species that naturally feed on freshwater snails.
  • Installing filtration systems at water intake points to prevent the entry of larvae and adults.
  • Periodic drainage of irrigation channels to desiccate the snails and their reproductive structures.
