Radopholus

Radopholus (Radopholus) is a genus of migratory endoparasitic nematodes belonging to the family Pratylenchidae, order Tylenchida. The most significant and economically damaging species is Radopholus similis, commonly referred to as the burrowing nematode. It is a major global pest that affects a wide variety of perennial crops in tropical and subtropical climates.

The host range of Radopholus is extremely broad, encompassing economically vital crops such as bananas, citrus, pineapples, black pepper, and tea. By invading the cortical tissue of roots, these nematodes create cavities and tunnels, effectively stripping the plant of its ability to absorb water and essential nutrients from the soil.

The biology of Radopholus is characterized by a rapid life cycle, which can be completed in about three to four weeks under favorable conditions. All developmental stages, including second-stage juveniles and adults, are capable of invading plant roots. Because they are migratory, they continue to feed and reproduce as they move through the root tissue, causing progressive damage.

The damage caused by Radopholus is both direct and indirect. Direct damage involves root lesions and the destruction of the root cortex, leading to stunted growth and yellowing of the foliage. Indirectly, the mechanical damage caused by the nematodes creates entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which cause root rot and accelerate the collapse of the plant.

Effective management and control strategies for Radopholus rely on preventative measures and integrated pest management (IPM) practices:

• Use of certified nematode-free planting material to prevent field infestation.
• Heat treatment (hot water treatment) of planting stock to eliminate nematodes.
• Implementation of strict quarantine protocols and nursery sanitation.
• Rotation with non-host crops to reduce soil nematode populations.
• Application of nematicides when necessary in high-value production systems.
