Coffee root nematode

Radopholus arabocoffeae is a specialized species of plant-parasitic nematode within the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This microscopic nematode is a significant concern for coffee producers globally, as it primarily targets the root system, causing substantial damage that compromises the vigor and yield of coffee trees.

The primary host for this pest is the Arabica coffee tree (Coffea arabica). The nematode invades the root tissues, establishing itself as an endoparasite. By feeding on the cortical cells of the roots, it creates lesions that disrupt the absorption of water and essential mineral nutrients, leading to the systemic decline of the host plant.

The biology and lifecycle of this nematode are heavily dependent on soil conditions and the presence of root exudates. The pest is highly motile in moist soil environments, allowing it to seek out new root tissue. Its life cycle involves several larval stages, and under favorable tropical conditions, it can complete multiple generations in a single growing season.

Damage assessment typically reveals severe root decay, where primary and secondary roots show necrotic lesions. This impairment of the root system often manifests above ground as nutrient deficiency symptoms, stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and significant fruit drop. Eventually, if left unmanaged, the tree may undergo terminal wilting and die.

Effective management and protection require a multi-disciplinary approach to minimize economic impact:

• Utilization of clean, nematode-free nursery stock to prevent initial introduction.
• Implementation of crop rotation patterns with non-host species to break the life cycle.
• Application of soil amendments that enhance natural predator populations.
• Strict adherence to quarantine regulations when transporting planting materials.
• Monitoring of soil moisture levels to create unfavorable conditions for nematode proliferation.
