Description
Radopholus duriophilus is a specialized plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This microscopic organism is recognized as a primary threat to durian plantations, causing significant damage to the roots of the durian tree.
The host range is primarily limited to durian (Durio zibethinus). The nematode attacks the root system, causing severe physiological stress to the tree by damaging the delicate root cortex where water and nutrient uptake occurs.
The life cycle of the nematode is closely tied to the roots of the host plant. Females lay eggs within the root tissue, and after hatching, the larvae move through the cortex, feeding on the cytoplasm of the cells. This migration results in the destruction of plant tissues and creates entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria.
Damage symptoms usually appear as reduced vigor, yellowing of the foliage, and stunted tree development. Over time, the root system shows signs of necrosis and lack of fibrous roots. Severe infestations frequently lead to root decay, causing the tree to suffer from nutritional deficiencies and eventually succumb to complete collapse.
Management of Radopholus duriophilus focuses on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. This includes sourcing certified, nematode-free seedlings, maintaining optimal soil health, and ensuring proper irrigation management to avoid waterlogging. Chemical control options are often limited; therefore, preventative agricultural practices remain the most effective means of suppression.
