Radopholus nativus is a significant species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Pratylenchidae, order Tylenchida. As an endoparasite, this organism primarily targets the roots of various plants, causing substantial physiological stress to the host. Its presence is often difficult to detect until severe symptoms appear on the plant canopy.

This nematode has a broad host range, affecting various agricultural and horticultural species. By invading the root cortex, the nematode consumes parenchymal cells, creating feeding lesions. This disruption leads to the malfunction of the root system, which critically impacts the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients from the soil substrate.

The biological cycle of Radopholus nativus involves stages of development that occur both within the plant tissues and in the surrounding rhizosphere. Females deposit eggs within the roots, and the emerging juveniles undergo several molts before reaching sexual maturity. The movement of the juvenile stages through the soil is heavily dependent on soil moisture levels and the presence of suitable host roots.

The economic impact of this pest is considerable. The characteristic damage includes root necrosis, lesion formation, and general chlorosis or wilting of the aerial parts. The primary damage is exacerbated by opportunistic pathogens such as fungi and bacteria that enter the plant through the lesions created by the nematodes, leading to root rot and eventual plant collapse.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Radopholus nativus. Key strategies include the use of nematode-free propagation material and rigorous field sanitation. Crop rotation with non-host species is highly recommended to deplete the soil population. In intensive farming, the application of nematicides may be required, although biological control agents and organic soil amendments are increasingly preferred for sustainable production.
