Description
Radopholus similis, commonly known as the burrowing nematode, is a significant endoparasitic pest within the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This microscopic nematode is recognized globally as one of the most destructive pests affecting tropical and subtropical agriculture.
The pest has a wide range of host plants, most notably banana, citrus, black pepper, coffee, ginger, and various ornamentals. It thrives in well-drained, sandy soils and is primarily disseminated through the movement of infested rhizomes, roots, or soil particles attached to agricultural equipment and footwear.
The life cycle of the burrowing nematode typically takes about 20 to 25 days under favorable conditions. Both the juveniles and adult females are capable of burrowing into the root cortex, where they feed on the parenchyma cells. This feeding creates tunnels and lesions, which facilitate secondary infections by soil-borne fungi and bacteria.
Damage to the plant is systemic and severe. The destruction of the root system impairs the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, resulting in stunting, yellowing of foliage, and reduced yields. In susceptible banana plantations, this leads to the "toppling disease," where the weakened root system cannot support the weight of the plant.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include:
- planting certified nematode-free material;
- implementing strict quarantine protocols;
- using crop rotation with non-host species;
- applying heat treatment (hot water treatment) for propagation material;
- the application of approved nematicides in high-value commercial plantings.
