Rhabditid nematode

Rhabditis lambdiensis belongs to the order Rhabditida and the family Rhabditidae. These microscopic worms are typically found in soil environments rich in organic matter. While often associated with decomposition processes, this species can act as a secondary pest or pathogen vector in agricultural settings, causing damage to stressed or already compromised plant tissues.

This nematode primarily affects various vegetable crops and root systems, including potatoes, carrots, and onions. The presence of these nematodes is often linked to high soil moisture levels and the presence of decomposing plant debris, which acts as a favorable habitat for their population growth and proliferation near the crop roots.

The biology and lifecycle of Rhabditis lambdiensis are characterized by rapid reproduction rates. The lifecycle consists of egg, four larval stages, and the adult stage. Because they thrive in decaying organic material, their populations can explode during wet seasons, leading to significant pressure on crops growing in poorly drained or overly organic-rich soils.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily manifested through necrotic lesions and tissue rot, which serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens. Infested plants typically exhibit signs of stunted growth, chlorosis, and general wilting, as the nematodes disrupt the normal functioning of the root system and nutrient uptake.
