Rhabditid nematode

Systematically, the species Rhabditis macrocheila belongs to the order Rhabditida, family Rhabditidae. Members of this group of nematodes often occupy an intermediate position between soil-dwelling saprotrophic organisms and facultative plant parasites. Their structure is characterized by a specific oral apparatus adapted to feeding on decaying organic matter or damaged plant tissues.

This pest mainly affects weakened plants or those already infected with bacterial rots. Rhabditis macrocheila is often found in vegetable crops, root vegetables, and ornamental plants under conditions of excessive soil moisture. Nematodes actively colonize parts of stems and roots where tissue decay processes have begun under the influence of pathogenic microflora.

The biology of the species is closely linked to the state of its habitat. The life cycle includes several larval stages that develop rapidly in conditions of high humidity and the presence of organic substrate. Reproduction occurs intensively, and during unfavorable periods, the nematodes can form resistant structures capable of surviving drought or low temperatures in the soil.

The nature of the damage involves the acceleration of tissue decay processes. The pest is not a primary aggressor; however, its massive presence significantly exacerbates the condition of the plant, preventing the healing of mechanical injuries and infectious lesions. Harmfulness manifests as a loss of product marketability, wilting of above-ground parts, and subsequent death of the damaged organs.

Control measures are based on agricultural practices aimed at improving soil health. Main management strategies include:

• Practicing crop rotation and avoiding over-irrigation of fields.
• Removing crop residues and composting organic matter.
• Monitoring moisture levels in greenhouses and fields.
