Description
Taxonomic position. The nematode Rhabditis oxycerca is classified within the order Rhabditida and the family Rhabditidae. These microscopic worms are frequently found in decomposing organic matter. They represent a significant group of pests capable of thriving in industrial mushroom production facilities.
Affected crops and damage. The species is primarily known as a pest of cultivated mushrooms such as Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus species. Nematodes penetrate the mycelial network, consuming the cytoplasm and damaging cell structures. This interference halts vegetative growth and causes significant yield losses.
Biology and life cycle. Rhabditis oxycerca has a remarkably short life cycle, allowing for rapid population explosions under favorable conditions of high humidity and warmth. The nematode's ability to enter a dormant state in adverse conditions helps it persist in the environment, making total elimination challenging.
Nature of injury. Infested mushroom substrate often displays signs of rot, abnormal softening, and an unpleasant, putrid odor. When the mycelium is consumed, it turns dark and loses its vigor. If left unchecked, the infestation ruins the entire substrate block, rendering the production cycle economically non-viable.
