Rhabditis strongyloides is a soil-dwelling nematode that, under certain environmental conditions, can transition to facultative parasitism. Systematically, this species belongs to the order Rhabditida and the family Rhabditidae. While these organisms are primarily associated with decomposing organic matter, they can infest weakened agricultural crop tissues.

This pest is most frequently found in crops cultivated in moist, organic-rich soils. In agricultural practice, the nematode can affect vegetable crops, seedlings, and ornamental plants, particularly within greenhouse environments where high humidity and decaying plant debris provide an optimal medium for rapid multiplication.

The biology of this nematode is intrinsically linked to moisture and decomposition processes. The life cycle involves several larval stages. Under unfavorable environmental conditions, the pest is capable of forming dauer larvae—a specialized, resistant life stage that can survive in the soil for extended periods while awaiting a suitable substrate or a compromised host plant.

The damage pattern is characterized by the nematode penetrating plant tissues that have already been weakened by bacterial or fungal infections. Rhabditis strongyloides feeds on the products of cellular decay, which significantly accelerates the rotting process of roots and stems. The overall harmful effect leads to stunted crop growth and a marked reduction in produce quality.
