Soil rhabditid

The soil rhabditid (Rhabditis terricola) is a microscopic nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Rhabditidae. While primarily recognized as a soil-dwelling saprophyte that feeds on organic matter, it can occasionally act as a plant-associated pest, causing indirect or direct damage to various vegetable and field crops.

These nematodes thrive in moist soils with high concentrations of decaying organic material. They frequently inhabit fields containing crop residues, where they find an ideal environment for reproduction. Plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, and other root crops are most susceptible to their colonization, especially when the root system is already compromised by environmental stress.

The life cycle of Rhabditis terricola is rapid, characterized by several larval stages that can adapt to changing soil conditions. Under moisture stress or cold temperatures, these nematodes can enter a dormant state, ensuring their survival in the soil profile until favorable conditions return. This ability makes them difficult to eliminate from infested fields.

Damage to plants typically begins with root colonization, which weakens the plant's structural integrity. These nematodes act as vectors or precursors for soil-borne pathogens, including bacteria and fungi that cause root rot and wilting. The visible result for farmers includes stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and reduced tuber or fruit quality, leading to significant yield losses.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to reduce population levels and prevent crop damage:
