Description

The Andean potato weevil (Rhigopsidius piercei) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Curculionidae, order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant threat to potato production in the high-altitude regions of South America. This pest is highly adapted to cooler climates and poses a serious challenge to smallholder farmers and large-scale agricultural enterprises alike.

The primary host for this pest is the potato (Solanum tuberosum). While adult weevils may feed on the foliage of potato plants, the most severe damage is caused by the larval stage. Larvae bore into the developing tubers, creating extensive tunnel systems that destroy the internal structure of the potato, rendering it unfit for consumption or market distribution.

The life cycle of Rhigopsidius piercei involves both soil-dwelling and tuber-boring phases. Adult weevils typically overwinter in the soil or protected debris near host crops. As the growing season commences, females lay eggs near the base of the plant or directly on the tubers. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately migrate into the tuber tissue to feed and complete their development.

The damage caused by the Andean potato weevil is characterized by irregular galleries and holes found within the tuber flesh. These wounds are frequently colonized by secondary pathogens, which accelerate the decomposition process and result in significant post-harvest losses. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the tubers, the infestation is often not detected until the harvest, making control efforts particularly difficult.
