Description

The Tucuman potato weevil (Rhigopsidius tucumanus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Primarily found in South America, this weevil is a specialized herbivore that targets Solanaceae crops. It is widely recognized as a serious threat to potato production, requiring rigorous monitoring to prevent its spread into unaffected agricultural areas.

The host range of R. tucumanus is largely restricted to potato plants (Solanum tuberosum). Both the larvae and adults can impact the crop, but the larvae are responsible for the most severe damage. They feed internally on the tubers, effectively tunneling through the starch-rich tissue, which compromises both the quantity and the marketability of the potato yield.

The biological life cycle of the Tucuman potato weevil is adapted to the soil environment where potato tubers develop. Females deposit eggs near the roots or on the tubers themselves. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the tuber, consuming the flesh as they grow. Once mature, the larvae form a pupal chamber either inside the damaged tuber or in the surrounding soil, eventually emerging as adult beetles to continue the cycle.

Damage caused by this weevil is characterized by entry holes on the tuber skin, followed by extensive internal galleries. These tunnels not only cause direct loss of weight and quality but also create entry points for secondary pathogens, such as soft rot bacteria and various fungi. Consequently, heavily infested crops often deteriorate rapidly in storage, leading to substantial economic losses for farmers.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key measures include:

  • The use of high-quality, pest-free seed potatoes to prevent introduction.
  • Crop rotation to reduce larval populations in the soil.
  • Deep hilling of soil to make it harder for females to access developing tubers.
  • Strategic application of systemic insecticides during the tuber-bulking stage to suppress larval survival.
