Thistle head weevil

Systematic position: The thistle head weevil (Rhinocyllus conicus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is widely recognized as a specialized phytophage that targets various plant species within the Asteraceae family, having been introduced in many regions of the world for the purpose of biological weed control.

Host plants and damage: The insect primarily attacks thistles (Carduus and Cirsium species). However, in agricultural contexts, its potential to shift to non-target Asteraceae species is a concern. While its primary role is suppressing invasive weeds, high populations can inadvertently affect native or cultivated flowers, causing concern for biodiversity and crop yields.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in leaf litter and emerge in the spring. Females deposit eggs on the bracts of developing flower heads and cover them with a protective, hardened substance. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the receptacle, where they consume floral tissues and developing seeds throughout their entire larval stage.

Nature of damage: The primary economic impact occurs during the larval stage. By feeding on the internal structures of the flower head, larvae prevent seed production and can deform the growth of the inflorescence. This reduction in viable seed set significantly curtails the spread of the host weed, but the same mechanism can be detrimental if the insects infest desirable plant species.

Management measures: Effective management of Rhinocyllus in agricultural settings focuses on monitoring and prevention.
