Rhinoncus is a genus of weevils belonging to the Curculionidae family within the Coleoptera order. These insects are recognized as specialized pests, primarily associated with plants of the Polygonaceae family, including buckwheat, which makes them a significant subject of study in entomology.

The primary crop damaged by these weevils is buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). Adults feed on the foliage, causing characteristic perforations, while the larvae are more destructive as they develop internally within the plant tissue, affecting its overall physiological health and development.

The life cycle of Rhinoncus follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering typically occurs as adults in the soil or beneath crop residues. With the arrival of spring, they emerge and start feeding on wild host plants before migrating to cultivated buckwheat fields.

Damage assessment shows that heavy infestations can lead to substantial yield reduction. Adults skeletonize leaves, while larval feeding disrupts nutrient transport within the stem. This combined stress leads to reduced seed set, poor grain filling, and an overall decline in crop vigor.
