Description

Systematic position. The buckwheat weevil (Rhinoncus perpendicularis) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized pest that primarily impacts buckwheat cultivation and is recognized as a significant threat in regions where this crop is grown extensively.

Crops damaged. The primary host plant for both larvae and adults is common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). The pest also utilizes various weed species within the Polygonaceae family, such as black-bindweed, as alternative food sources, which helps the population persist in fields throughout the season.

Biology and life cycle. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under crop residues. Once spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to feed on young buckwheat sprouts. Females deposit eggs on the leaves or stems of the plants. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the plant tissues, feeding internally before eventually pupating in the soil.

Character of damage and harmfulness. Adult weevils cause damage by feeding on leaves, creating distinctive small holes. The larvae are more destructive, as they mine the stems and flower stalks. This internal feeding disrupts nutrient flow, leads to stunted plant growth, causes wilting of reproductive organs, and results in substantial grain yield losses.

Control measures. Effective management includes cultural and chemical practices. Crop rotation and thorough deep plowing in autumn are essential to disrupt the overwintering cycle of the beetles. Managing weed populations within and around fields is crucial to remove alternative breeding grounds. In cases of high pest pressure, insecticide application during the budding stage of the buckwheat is recommended to prevent significant economic damage.
