Rhinyptia is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Scarabaeidae. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests in various parts of the world. Taxonomically, Rhinyptia falls within the subfamily Rutelinae. These beetles are characterized by a robust physiology that allows them to thrive in various soil conditions. The adults are typically nocturnal, while the larval stages, often called grubs, reside in the soil profile where they feed on organic matter and living roots.
The primary hosts for this pest include major cereal crops such as pearl millet, sorghum, and maize. Due to the wide host range, these beetles can persist in agricultural landscapes where these crops are cultivated continuously. Damage to the root system is particularly detrimental during the early growth stages, often resulting in stand failure.
The biological cycle is dictated by seasonal rainfall and soil moisture. Eggs are deposited in the soil, and the resulting larvae pass through several instars. The damage caused by larvae is direct: they destroy root structures, which limits water and nutrient uptake. Adults, meanwhile, cause secondary damage by feeding on foliage and potentially damaging emerging floral structures.
