Rhodococcus is a genus of actinobacteria that includes the significant plant pathogen Rhodococcus fascians. Systematically, this organism belongs to the family Nocardiaceae within the order Mycobacteriales. It is recognized globally by agronomists as a persistent pathogen capable of inducing severe morphological abnormalities in a wide variety of ornamental and crop species.

The host range of this bacterium is remarkably broad, including numerous herbaceous and woody plants. Economically important crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, and various legumes are susceptible, alongside a vast array of greenhouse-grown flowers like petunias and geraniums. Transmission primarily occurs through contaminated propagation material, soil, water, and tools used in routine horticultural practices.

The biology of Rhodococcus fascians is characterized by its ability to modulate the plant hormone balance. By secreting specific cytokinins, the bacteria interfere with the natural development of the host, leading to the proliferation of meristematic tissues. This physiological hijacking disrupts the plant's normal growth patterns, causing systemic infection and colonization of the plant surfaces.

The damage caused by this pathogen is often manifested as fasciation, where stems become flattened, thickened, and distorted. Infected plants typically exhibit severe stunting, internode shortening, and the development of dense clusters of small, undeveloped shoots, often referred to as "witches' brooms." This results in significant economic loss due to reduced quality and yield potential.
