Rhodococcus turanicus is a pathogenic actinomycete belonging to the order Actinomycetales and the family Nocardiaceae. In agricultural contexts, it is recognized as an agent responsible for the development of bacterial galls and abnormal tissue growths on the bark and stems of woody plants.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are fruit trees within the Rosaceae family. It is most commonly found affecting apple and pear orchards. By colonizing the bark, the bacterium creates long-term health issues that can affect the structural integrity and overall vigor of the host plant throughout its lifespan.
The biology and lifecycle of this organism are centered on its ability to infiltrate tree tissues through wounds, frost cracks, or pruning sites. Once established, the bacteria trigger hyperplastic cell growth in the host plant. This process is continuous, allowing the pathogen to persist within the bark tissues throughout the dormant season and resume activity during the spring.
The damage caused by Rhodococcus turanicus is manifested by the formation of tumor-like structures and galls on branches and trunks. These lesions cause the bark to crack and peel, which interferes with the tree's vascular system. Over time, this leads to reduced fruit yields, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the eventual decline of the tree.
