Alder flea weevil

The Alder flea weevil (Rhynchaenus alni) is a small beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is named for its ability to jump using its enlarged hind legs, which is a distinctive adaptation among these weevils. This small insect is widely recognized as a serious pest for specific forest and ornamental tree species.

The primary host plants for this insect are species of the genus Alnus (Alder). However, it is also frequently found on birch (Betula), linden (Tilia), and hazel trees. When conditions for the pest's reproduction are optimal, they can cause widespread defoliation, significantly affecting the aesthetic value and physiological health of trees in parks and urban settings.

The life cycle of the Alder flea weevil is characterized by a single annual generation. Adult beetles overwinter in sheltered locations such as leaf litter, soil crevices, or under tree bark. In the spring, they emerge to feed on developing leaves. Females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue, where the emerging larvae hatch and begin feeding as leaf miners, creating distinct tunnels inside the foliage.

The damage caused by the larvae manifests as brown blotch mines that eventually cause the leaves to curl, brown, and drop prematurely. Adult beetles also contribute to the damage by creating multiple small 'shot-holes' in the leaves. Severe infestations often lead to a significant loss of leaf surface area, stressing the host tree and potentially hindering its seasonal growth.

Management and control strategies typically include:
