The hazel leaf miner (Rhynchaenus avellanae) is a small weevil belonging to the Curculionidae family, within the order Coleoptera. This species is recognized as a significant pest of hazelnut trees (Corylus avellana) and is known for its ability to cause extensive aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plant.

The biology of this pest is highly specialized. It spends the winter as an adult in sheltered locations, such as forest litter or bark crevices. With the onset of spring temperatures and bud break, the weevils emerge to feed on the tender young foliage, later laying eggs beneath the leaf epidermis, which allows the larvae to begin feeding internally immediately upon hatching.

The larval stage is spent entirely inside the leaf tissue, where it creates characteristic blotch mines. As the larva grows, the mine expands, resulting in large, brownish necrotic patches. These damaged areas eventually die, causing the leaves to become perforated and distorted, which interferes with the overall photosynthetic efficiency of the hazelnut tree.

The economic impact of Rhynchaenus avellanae can be substantial if management is neglected.
