Systematic position: The willow leaf miner (Rhynchaenus canus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These small weevils are specialized pests known for their ability to thrive on willow trees, exhibiting a unique life history associated with leaf tissue consumption.

Crops affected: The primary hosts for this species are various willow species (Salix spp.). They are particularly problematic in nurseries, willow plantations, and ornamental settings. High infestations can cause significant stress to trees, reducing the economic and aesthetic value of the plantings.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is tightly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adults emerge in early spring to feed on foliage. Eggs are laid directly into the leaf tissue. Larvae develop inside the leaves, creating mines, which is where they complete their development before pupating and emerging as the next generation of adults.

Nature of damage and pest importance: The damage is twofold: adult weevils leave small shot-holes in the leaves, while the larvae create larger, distinct mines. A heavy infestation can lead to significant defoliation, stunted shoot growth, and premature leaf drop, which weakens the overall health of the willow trees and makes them susceptible to secondary infections.

Control measures: Effective management includes cultural practices such as gathering and destroying fallen leaves to eliminate pupae and overwintering adults.
