Description
Systematic position. The mango leaf miner weevil (Rhynchaenus magniferae) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant pest specifically targeting mango orchards worldwide.
Crops and damage. The insect primarily affects mango trees (Mangifera indica). The larvae cause the most damage by mining the interior tissues of the leaves. This feeding behavior results in winding tunnels visible on the leaf surface, which can cause leaf desiccation, premature drop, and significantly reduced yield of mango fruit.
Biology and life cycle. Rhynchaenus magniferae undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult females lay eggs in the soft tissue of new leaves. After hatching, the larvae spend their entire development cycle inside the leaf, creating extensive galleries. Once mature, the larvae pupate within these mines before emerging as adults.
Adult beetles are distinctive for their ability to jump when disturbed, which is a common characteristic of the Rhynchaenus genus. They also feed on the foliage by making tiny puncture holes. Under favorable weather conditions, populations can surge rapidly, potentially causing severe defoliation in young orchards.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this weevil effectively:
- Regular monitoring of new leaf flushes for early signs of mining.
- Removal and destruction of infested leaves to interrupt the life cycle.
- Application of systemic insecticides during peak periods of adult activity.
- Encouraging natural predators that help manage the population of larvae and adults.
