Apple flea weevil

Systematic position: The apple flea weevil Rhynchaenus pallicornis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a well-known leaf-mining pest distributed across temperate regions where apple cultivation is common.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the apple tree. However, it can also infest other Rosaceae species, including pears, hawthorns, and mountain ashes. Under favorable environmental conditions, the population can increase significantly, causing economic damage to commercial orchards.

Biology and lifecycle: Adult weevils overwinter in leaf litter, under loose bark, or within the soil surface. In early spring, as buds begin to burst, the adults emerge to feed on developing foliage. Females lay their eggs by inserting them into the leaf tissue. The larvae hatch and create mines within the leaf blade, where they complete their development.

Damage and impact: Adult weevils cause minor damage by chewing small, pin-like holes in the foliage. The larval stage is more destructive, as larvae tunnel through the leaf, creating irregular blotch mines. These damaged areas turn brown, dry out, and often fall off prematurely, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor of the host tree.

Control measures: Management of the apple flea weevil requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as cleaning up and destroying fallen leaves in autumn are essential to reduce overwintering sites. During the growing season, if the pest population exceeds the economic threshold, targeted insecticide applications—either systemic or contact-based—are recommended to minimize leaf damage.
