Description
The poplar flea weevil (lat. Rhynchaenus populicola) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This tiny beetle is characterized by enlarged hind femora, which grant it the ability to leap like a flea. It acts as a specialized herbivore specifically targeting various species within the Populus genus.
This pest primarily damages poplar trees, including black and white poplar species. It is a significant issue in forestry, nurseries, and urban landscaping, where the aesthetic and structural health of these fast-growing trees is of primary concern to arborists and forest managers.
The biological cycle is strictly synchronized with the development of the host plant. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or under bark crevices, emerging in early spring. Females oviposit into the leaf tissue, where larvae emerge to feed on the parenchyma. This feeding activity creates distinct blotch mines within the leaf, eventually leading to pupation inside the mine.
The damage is twofold: adults create small feeding holes in leaves, while larvae cause more severe damage through mining. Extensive mining reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the tree, leading to chlorosis, premature leaf drop, and overall stress, which may stunt the growth of young seedlings.
- Monitor leaf canopy during late spring to detect early signs of larval mining activity.
- Apply systemic insecticides during the peak of adult emergence to prevent egg-laying.
- Remove and destroy fallen leaves in autumn to disrupt the overwintering cycle of the weevils.
- Promote tree vigor through proper irrigation and nutrition to help trees withstand moderate infestations.
