Description
The Rusty-legged flea weevil (Rhynchaenus rufipes) is a member of the Curculionidae family, within the order Coleoptera. It is a specialized pest known for its ability to infest various fruit trees. Despite its small size, this insect can significantly impact orchard health through its feeding habits during both the larval and adult stages.
The primary hosts for Rhynchaenus rufipes include species of the Rosaceae family, such as apple and pear trees. The larvae are particularly destructive as they develop inside the leaf tissue, while adults feed on both leaves and developing buds, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plant.
The life cycle of this weevil is closely tied to the host tree's phenology. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or under the bark. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge to feed on developing foliage. Females then deposit eggs into the leaves, where the larvae mine the tissue, creating characteristic galleries that become visible as the damage progresses.
Damage symptoms manifest as small circular holes made by adults and elongated, winding mines created by the feeding larvae. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, reduced photosynthesis, and overall physiological stress for the tree, which can negatively affect fruit yields and general growth vigor over consecutive seasons.
Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management. Mechanical controls, such as the removal of leaf debris where the insects hibernate, are essential. When pest pressure exceeds economic thresholds, targeted chemical applications with approved insecticides during the early stages of bud burst or initial adult emergence are the most effective way to manage the population.
