Birch flea weevil

Systematic position: The birch flea weevil (Rhynchaenus rusci) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a well-known leaf-mining beetle that primarily targets birch species, causing visible damage to both wild forests and urban landscaping plantings.

Host plants and economic impact: The primary hosts are birch trees (Betula spp.). Damage caused by these beetles can be significant, especially in nurseries and ornamental landscapes, as repeated defoliation weakens trees, makes them more susceptible to fungal diseases, and reduces their overall aesthetic and ecological value.

Biology and life cycle: Adult weevils overwinter in leaf litter or bark crevices. In spring, they emerge to feed on young leaves, creating small holes. Females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, larvae feed internally, creating mines—tunnels between the upper and lower leaf layers—where they eventually pupate.

Nature of damage: The damage is twofold: adults cause "shot-hole" damage by grazing on the leaf surface, while larvae cause characteristic brown, blotchy mines. During severe infestations, a large percentage of the leaf area can be destroyed, leading to premature leaf drop and reduced tree vitality.

Maintaining healthy trees through proper watering and fertilization also helps trees withstand the stress of insect feeding.
