Description
The willow jumping weevil (Rhynchaenus stigma) is a species of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae within the order Coleoptera. This small beetle is recognized for its distinctive jumping ability, facilitated by specialized structural modifications in its hind legs, allowing it to evade threats rapidly.
This pest specifically targets species of the genus Salix (willow), and occasionally feeds on Populus (poplar) species. It is considered a significant pest in nursery settings and forest plantations where it can affect the vitality of young trees by feeding on foliage throughout the growing season.
The life cycle begins in spring when overwintered adults emerge from leaf litter or bark crevices. After feeding on the buds and young leaves, females deposit eggs into the leaf tissue. The larvae emerge and act as leaf miners, consuming the interior of the leaf and creating distinctive necrotic blotches.
The damage caused by R. stigma is primarily aesthetic and physiological. Severe infestations can lead to premature leaf drop and stunted growth. The loss of leaf surface area inhibits the tree’s ability to conduct photosynthesis, thereby reducing the plant's overall health and vigor over time.
