Soybean stem weevil

The soybean stem weevil (Rhyssomatus subtilis) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family. It is recognized as a specialized feeder that primarily targets legumes. Its impact is most pronounced in regions where soybean cultivation is intensified, often leading to substantial yield losses if not managed correctly.

The host range of Rhyssomatus subtilis is predominantly focused on soybean (Glycine max). The pest poses a threat throughout the soybean growth cycle. Adult beetles feed on the foliage and stems, while the larvae are internal feeders, causing damage that is not immediately visible from the outside until plant health has already deteriorated significantly.

Regarding its life cycle, the female weevil inserts eggs into the stems or petioles of the soybean plant. Once the larvae emerge, they tunnel into the interior tissues, specifically the pith. This feeding behavior disrupts the vascular system, effectively cutting off the supply of essential nutrients and moisture to the upper parts of the plant.

The damage caused by these weevils results in stunted plant growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the lodging of stems. Plants weakened by larval tunneling are more susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stress. This direct damage to the crop structure often leads to a decrease in seed weight and overall harvest volume.

Effective management strategies for Rhyssomatus subtilis require an integrated approach to minimize population levels:

• Crop rotation to break the life cycle of the weevil in soybean-prone fields.
• Timely application of systemic insecticides that target adult weevils before oviposition occurs.
• Deep tillage after harvest to bury and eliminate overwintering populations in the soil.
• Removal of alternative host weeds within and surrounding the field borders.
• Strict field monitoring and scouting to detect early signs of adult activity.
