Rough weevil

Romualdius scaber

Description

The rough weevil (Romualdius scaber) is a member of the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. As a small snout beetle, it is often overlooked by growers until visual damage becomes apparent in the field. Despite its diminutive size, it can be a persistent and challenging pest in both agricultural and horticultural settings, demanding careful management strategies.

This pest has a diverse host range, primarily targeting various vegetable crops and selected field plants. Adults are known to feed on foliage, creating notches along the leaf margins, while the larvae inhabit the soil. This dual-threat feeding behavior means the plant is attacked from both above and below, leading to severe physiological stress.

The life cycle of Romualdius scaber is largely soil-dependent. Adult weevils typically overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in early spring as temperatures rise. After mating, eggs are deposited near the host plant. Larvae then emerge to feed on roots or root crowns, progressing through several instars before pupating and eventually emerging as the next generation of adults.

Damage caused by the rough weevil often leads to stunted growth and reduced vigor. Foliar feeding, while usually not lethal on its own, weakens the plant's photosynthetic capacity. However, larval damage to the root system is more critical, as it can hinder water and nutrient uptake, causing yellowing, wilting, and in cases of high population density, total plant failure.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, thorough soil cultivation, and the removal of weed hosts are fundamental to breaking its life cycle. In scenarios where population thresholds are exceeded, targeted applications of insecticides may be necessary. Monitoring tools, such as pitfall traps, help agronomists make informed decisions regarding timing for interventions.
