Description

Sugarcane mealy scale (Saccharipulvinaria iceryi) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to sugarcane cultivation, causing substantial yield losses in tropical and subtropical agricultural regions worldwide.

The primary host for this pest is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum), though it can infest various other grass species. The insects settle primarily on the undersides of leaves and along the leaf sheaths, where they establish dense colonies that feed on the sap of the vascular plant system.

The life cycle involves several developmental stages, starting from eggs deposited within a white, cottony ovisac produced by the female. Upon hatching, the mobile crawlers (first-instar nymphs) migrate to fresh feeding sites. Once they settle, they remain stationary, secreting a protective waxy covering that renders them difficult to control.

The damage caused by Saccharipulvinaria iceryi is twofold. First, direct feeding depletes plant nutrients, causing stunted growth and chlorosis. Second, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold fungi, which inhibits the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively, often resulting in poor quality cane and reduced sugar content.
