Saga pedo

Systematic position: Saga pedo, commonly known as the predatory bush-cricket or steppe predatory bush-cricket, belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae. It is one of the largest insects in Europe and functions primarily as a solitary predator, distinguishing it from most herbivorous grasshoppers.

Affected crops: While it is not classified as a major agricultural pest, Saga pedo inhabits agricultural fringes, meadows, and grasslands. By preying upon other insects, it can indirectly influence the population of both beneficial species and minor pests within the surrounding agroecosystem.

Biology and life cycle: The species reproduces through obligate parthenogenesis, meaning the population consists entirely of females. The life cycle involves overwintering eggs deposited in the soil. The nymphs emerge in spring and undergo several molts (instars) before reaching the adult stage in mid-summer, allowing them to thrive in arid steppe climates.

Damage and harmfulness: As a sit-and-wait predator, it uses its raptorial front legs to seize prey such as beetles, grasshoppers, and other invertebrates. Its "harmfulness" is mainly ecological: by consuming beneficial predatory insects or pollinators, it can disrupt the natural biological control mechanisms that farmers rely on for pest management.

Protection measures: Because Saga pedo is considered a rare and endangered species in many regions, it is often legally protected. It should not be targeted by eradication programs. Instead, conservation and management practices should prioritize:

• Preservation of natural habitats and buffer zones around agricultural fields.
• Implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) to reduce chemical impact.
• Maintenance of hedges and uncultivated edges that serve as refuges.
• Avoidance of intensive soil cultivation in areas where the population is established.
