Saissetia
Description
Systematic position. The genus Saissetia belongs to the order Hemiptera, suborder Coccoidea, and the family Coccidae (soft scales). These pests are distinguished by their lack of a separate waxy scale, as the protective cover is part of their own thickened, sclerotized body wall.
Host plants. These insects are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a wide range of host plants. Major targets include citrus trees, olives, oleander, laurel, various palm species, and many ornamental greenhouse plants. Their ability to adapt allows them to thrive in various climatic zones.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle typically involves egg, nymphal (first, second, and third instar), and adult stages. Females are sedentary and highly prolific, often reproducing through parthenogenesis. The crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, moving to new leaf surfaces or stems before settling down to feed.
Damage and economic impact. As phloem feeders, these insects weaken the plant by extracting essential nutrients.
- Heavy infestations lead to leaf chlorosis and premature leaf drop.
- Excreted honeydew encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks light and hinders photosynthesis.
- Severe cases can lead to branch dieback or total loss of the host plant.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Saissetia. Biological control agents, such as parasitic wasps or ladybird beetles, can be very effective in large-scale settings. For chemical intervention, horticultural oils or systemic insecticides are recommended to penetrate the protective shell, while frequent pruning helps remove heavily infested plant parts.
