Caribbean black scale

The Caribbean black scale (Saissetia neglecta) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that primarily affects citrus orchards and various ornamental plants. Understanding its biology is essential for maintaining the health of plantations in regions prone to infestation.

Host plants for this species are diverse, but they are most commonly found on citrus trees, including oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. They can also colonize coffee, mango, and other subtropical trees. Because they are sap-sucking insects, they have a high potential to compromise the overall vigor and productivity of the infested plant species.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, several nymphal stages (crawlers), and the adult phase. The female is protected by a tough, convex scale, which serves as a shield against external environmental factors. The mobile crawler stage is the most vulnerable phase, as it is during this period that the pest actively spreads across the plant canopy and to adjacent plants.

The damage caused by the Caribbean black scale is twofold. First, it directly extracts essential plant fluids, causing stunted growth, yellowing, and leaf drop. Second, the honeydew produced during feeding acts as a substrate for sooty mold, a fungus that covers the leaves and blocks sunlight, thereby severely inhibiting the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
