Systematic position: The sacred scarab (Scarabaeus sacer) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is a well-known member of the subfamily Scarabaeinae, recognized globally for its distinctive behavior of rolling dung into balls for nutritional and reproductive purposes.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is closely tied to organic matter decomposition. Adults create dung balls, which serve as a food source and a protected environment for egg-laying. The larvae develop inside these dung balls buried underground, where they undergo a complete metamorphosis before emerging as adult beetles.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: While Scarabaeus sacer is primarily beneficial as an ecosystem recycler, it can occasionally act as an agricultural pest. Their burrowing activities in the soil profile can damage the root systems of young crops, leading to water stress, nutrient uptake issues, and potentially stunted growth in fields with high beetle density.

Crops affected: Damage is most commonly observed in fields where fresh manure is used as a fertilizer, attracting large populations of beetles. Vegetables, row crops, and young grain seedlings are particularly susceptible to root disturbance caused by the intensive digging activities of these beetles during their nesting season.
