The genus Scepticus belongs to the Curculionidae family, commonly known as true weevils, within the order Coleoptera. These insects are distinguished by their elongated snout, which is a key morphological feature used for both feeding and oviposition. Their classification as agricultural pests is based on their significant impact on various plant species, which requires active monitoring and management strategies in farming.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, particularly legumes and various vegetable crops. By feeding on both the vegetative and root systems of the plants, Scepticus can cause substantial physiological stress. Their presence is often detected in fields where crop rotation is neglected, allowing populations to build up significantly over several seasons within the same area.

The biology and life cycle of the Scepticus species involve complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering typically occurs in the adult stage within soil cracks or under plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed on foliage before mating and laying eggs in the soil, initiating the development of the next generation of larvae.

Damage caused by this insect is twofold: adult beetles cause defoliation by eating the margins of leaves, which gives them a notched appearance, while the larvae feed on roots. Root damage is particularly detrimental as it disrupts water and nutrient uptake, leading to stunted plant growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the death of the crop.
