Sciopithes

Sciopithes is a genus of weevils belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). These beetles are known to cause significant damage to a wide range of agricultural, ornamental, and forestry crops, often posing a specific threat in nurseries and managed garden environments.

The pest primarily targets broad-leaved plants, including various berry bushes, fruit trees, and ornamental perennials. Adult beetles are frequently observed on species such as rhododendrons, strawberries, and certain conifers, where they feed on foliage.

The biology of the species involves adult beetles that are largely nocturnal, hiding in the soil or beneath plant debris during daylight hours. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae develop within the soil, feeding on plant root systems, which makes early detection of an infestation particularly challenging.

Feeding damage is characterized by notched leaf edges caused by adults, which is a classic diagnostic symptom. However, the most destructive impact comes from the larvae feeding on roots, which weakens the plant, reduces its vigor, causes foliage chlorosis, and in severe cases, results in the death of young plants.

Control measures require an integrated approach: applying soil-applied insecticides to manage larval populations and using contact-systemic insecticides on foliage to control adults during their peak activity. Standard horticultural practices such as weed control, soil cultivation around the root zone, and the use of sticky barriers are also recommended to reduce pest pressure.
