Description
The almond bark beetle (Scolytus amygdali) is a significant pest belonging to the Curculionidae family and Scolytinae subfamily. It is a wood-boring insect that poses a serious threat to stone fruit orchards globally, causing severe damage to woody tissues.
The primary hosts of this beetle include almond, peach, plum, apricot, and cherry trees. The pest typically targets trees already weakened by drought, poor nutritional status, or previous damage. However, in cases of high population density, it can successfully colonize vigorous trees, leading to rapid decline.
The life cycle involves multiple stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults emerge in spring and bore into the bark to construct egg galleries. The larvae then bore perpendicular tunnels into the phloem and cambium. This feeding behavior disrupts the translocation of nutrients and water, which is critical for the tree's health.
Damage is characterized by the presence of numerous small, circular exit holes in the bark, often accompanied by gum exudation (gummosis). As the population grows, the internal network of tunnels causes branch dieback and, eventually, the death of the entire tree. The economic impact includes significant yield losses and the cost of tree removal.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include maintaining high tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization, as well as the immediate removal and destruction of infested wood to prevent the spread of the next generation. Applying contact insecticides during the adult flight period and utilizing pheromone traps are effective tactics to reduce population pressure.
