Description
The Deodar bark beetle (Latin Scolytus deodara) is a significant wood-boring pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the Curculionidae family (subfamily Scolytinae). This insect primarily targets conifer species, causing severe physiological stress and potentially death to trees in both forest ecosystems and urban landscapes.
The primary hosts for this pest include trees within the genus Cedrus, most notably the Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara). When environmental conditions favor the pest, populations can escalate rapidly, leading to mass infestations that can devastate ornamental plantings and commercial timber stands if left unchecked.
The biology and lifecycle of Scolytus deodara revolve around the cambial layer of the host tree. Adults bore through the outer bark to excavate egg galleries, where they lay their eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae construct their own galleries, feeding on the inner bark and phloem. This process disrupts the tree's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients.
Infestation is characterized by yellowing needles, premature needle drop, and visible entrance or exit holes on the trunk. In many cases, sap exudation (pitch tubes) can be observed at the attack sites. The cumulative damage significantly weakens the tree, making it susceptible to secondary infections and leading to terminal decline.
