Description
Systematic position: The European oak bark beetle (Scolytus intricatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a significant wood-boring insect that causes substantial damage to oak forests globally.
Target plants: This pest primarily targets oak trees (genus Quercus). While it specializes in oaks, it can also infest other hardwoods such as beech (Fagus), elm (Ulmus), and birch (Betula), especially when these trees are under physiological stress from drought or secondary infections.
Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as larvae beneath the bark. In the spring, they pupate and transform into adults. The adults emerge and undergo maturation feeding at the base of young twigs. They then bore into the bark to construct egg galleries, where the next generation of larvae will develop through the summer.
Nature of damage and economic impact: Adult beetles create vertical maternal galleries, while larvae feed perpendicular to these, creating a star-like pattern. This damage disrupts the phloem, effectively girdling the tree. Severe infestations result in crown dieback, leaf yellowing, and eventually the death of the tree.
