Description
The Mediterranean fruit-tree bark beetle (Scolytus mediterraneus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized as a significant pest in orchards, particularly in Mediterranean climates, where it poses a constant threat to woody plants.
This species primarily attacks stone fruit trees. Species such as apricots, peaches, plums, and cherries are highly susceptible to infestations. While the beetle naturally targets weakened or dying trees, large populations can rapidly overwhelm healthy trees, causing structural damage and significant economic losses.
The biology of Scolytus mediterraneus is characterized by a multi-generational cycle that depends heavily on local temperature patterns. Larvae typically overwinter under the bark. As temperatures rise in spring, the insects complete their development into adults, which emerge to mate and start new gallery systems, often producing several generations per year.
The primary damage is caused by the adults boring into the bark and the larvae excavating complex gallery systems in the cambium layer. These activities interrupt the flow of water and nutrients, which often results in branch dieback, heavy gumosis, and the eventual death of the entire tree if the infestation remains unchecked.
Management strategies for this pest require a proactive approach. Maintaining orchard health through proper pruning, adequate irrigation, and balanced fertilization is the first line of defense. Furthermore, removing infested branches, monitoring for entry holes, and applying timely insecticide sprays during beetle flight periods are essential components of an effective integrated pest management program.
