Smaller European elm bark beetle

The smaller European elm bark beetle (Scolytus multistriatus) is a member of the Curculionidae family and is a significant pest of elms. It is globally recognized as a primary vector for the Dutch elm disease, a lethal fungal infection that affects numerous tree species in temperate regions.

Primary hosts for this insect include elm species, such as American elm, slippery elm, and European elm. In agricultural and ornamental settings, they may also attack stressed fruit-bearing trees. The beetles are specifically attracted to weakened or dying wood, which provides ideal conditions for their larval development.

The life cycle begins when the female beetle bores into the bark to construct a gallery and deposit eggs. Once hatched, larvae feed on the cambium layer, creating distinct radiating patterns. The development of new generations happens through several stages, usually spanning from late spring to early autumn, depending on local climate conditions.

The damage caused by the beetle is twofold: physical destruction of the tree's vascular system and the introduction of fungal pathogens during feeding. This results in crown yellowing, wilting, and eventual death of the affected branch or the entire tree, especially in cases of heavy infestation.

By monitoring the beetle population and reducing the amount of suitable breeding material in the environment, orchard managers and arborists can significantly mitigate the risk of tree mortality and the spread of associated fungal diseases.
