Description
The Birch bark beetle (Scolytus ratzeburgi) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting birch trees across its distribution range, often causing significant economic and ecological losses in forests.
The primary hosts of this beetle are various species of birch (Betula spp.). While the insect can infest healthy trees during periods of high population density, it predominantly targets stressed, injured, or aging birch stands that are already weakened by environmental factors like drought or pollution.
The life cycle typically spans one year, though it can vary based on local climatic conditions. Adult beetles emerge in spring and bore into the bark to construct egg galleries. The larvae then feed on the phloem and cambium layer of the tree, creating intricate gallery patterns that disrupt the transport of water and nutrients.
Damage symptoms are distinctive: the trunk becomes riddled with small circular exit holes, often described as having a "shotgun blast" appearance. As the galleries girdle the stem and cut off the tree’s internal pathways, the canopy loses its leaves, the tree suffers from dieback, and eventually dies within a few seasons.
