Description
The tsuga bark beetle (Scolytus tsugae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. This species is primarily associated with the genus Tsuga, commonly known as hemlock, and poses a significant threat to forest and ornamental plantings.
The host range is focused on Tsuga species. The beetle acts as a secondary pest, typically colonizing trees that are already stressed by environmental factors, such as drought, soil compaction, or poor site conditions, effectively accelerating their decline.
The biological cycle of Scolytus tsugae involves adults boring into the bark to create egg galleries. After hatching, the larvae mine tunnels through the cambium layer. These larval galleries, often perpendicular to the maternal gallery, cause significant physiological damage to the host's vascular system.
Damage symptoms include the presence of numerous small entrance holes on the trunk and branches, often accompanied by frass accumulation. The cumulative damage leads to the girdling of the tree, which results in canopy dieback, yellowing or reddening of the foliage, and eventually the death of the tree.
