Description
Systematic position. The genus Scudderia belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae, commonly known as bush katydids. These insects are distinguished by their bright green camouflage and distinct acoustic signaling, often inhabiting various orchard and woody plant ecosystems in North America.
Crops and damage patterns. The genus is polyphagous, targeting a diverse array of fruit trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. Apples, pears, and citrus are frequently cited as primary hosts. Both nymphs and adults exhibit defoliating behavior, consuming irregular, ragged holes in leaf tissue, which can lead to significant canopy loss if population density is high.
Biology and life cycle. Scudderia undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. The females are equipped with a specialized scythe-shaped ovipositor, which they use to insert eggs into the edges of host leaves. These eggs typically overwinter in the leaf litter or surrounding debris, with nymphs emerging in the spring to begin their growth cycle through several instars.
Economic impact. While often considered a minor pest, high populations can cause significant agricultural stress. Beyond aesthetic damage to ornamental crops, the reduction in photosynthetically active leaf area can lead to reduced fruit size and weakened plant vigor. In some cases, surface scarring on young fruit can reduce the market value of the harvest.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling katydid outbreaks. Effective strategies include:
- Maintaining clean orchard floors and managing weeds to reduce egg-laying sites.
- Regular visual monitoring during twilight hours when the insects are most active.
- Targeted application of insecticides during early nymphal stages when the pests are most vulnerable.
- Encouraging natural predators, such as birds and parasitic wasps, to balance the ecosystem.
