Description
Systematic position. The Texas bush katydid (Scudderia texensis) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae. These insects are well-known for their leaf-like appearance, which serves as a highly effective camouflage mechanism, allowing them to remain undetected by both predators and observers while feeding on foliage.
Crops affected. This species is a polyphagous pest capable of infesting a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. Major targets include soybean, alfalfa, various vegetable crops, and ornamental plants. Their feeding habits can compromise the vegetative health of plants, making them a concern for both commercial growers and private gardeners.
Biology and lifecycle. The development of the Texas bush katydid follows a hemimetabolous lifecycle, consisting of eggs, nymphs, and adults. Females use a sharp ovipositor to insert eggs into the margins of leaves. Upon hatching, the nymphs go through several instar stages, feeding aggressively on plant tissue until they reach the adult stage, at which point they become fully winged and mobile.
Damage and economic impact. Both nymphs and adults consume leaf tissue, often starting from the edges and working inward, resulting in ragged, irregular leaf margins. While light feeding might be cosmetic, severe infestations can lead to significant defoliation, stunted plant growth, and diminished yield quality, which poses an economic risk to sensitive crops.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include:

- Managing nearby weed hosts that serve as breeding grounds.
